So when I HEAR the cries of other mothers’ children in the media, I feel ashamed because WE CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS. So instead of adding to their cries, I will try to offer some solutions. I hope this will spur others to work together as a society to STOP this travesty. How can we mandate that all kids attend school and then we refuse to keep them safe? I propose we start at the top with five suggestions:
1. Propose and pass a bill that mandates until the virus of gun violence is stopped, all lawmakers and government/elected officials must spend 1/3 of their working time at schools and facilities targeted by gunmen. With more eyes on the ground we’ll hopefully be able to get a better handle on the situation. Information is one key to success. Lawmakers and government/elected officials also must participate at school once a year during training on how to avoid gunmen. All government employee, elected officials, appointees, etc. must comply-no exceptions.
2. All parents/guardians will be allowed to volunteer up to 6 hours a month in their schools to help provide safety for their children. All employers will consider this paid leave. No one is better at protecting kids on an average than their own parents/guardians. Again with more eyes in the field more information can be collected. With people available to sound an alert or notice something important we may reach 0 count.
3. Our goal as Americans is 0 mass shootings for 1 year. When reached, this goal will be extended for 2 year increments as necessary.
4. Americans will limit the use of AK and AR rifles to military or police use only. If you want to collect, the gun must be rendered harmless. If you want to use an assault rifle-join the armed forces or join law enforcement. These organizations will teach and be responsible for all legal assault rifles. These tools were made for these organizations.
5. All legal firearm ownership will be granted at age 21 to graduates from a school of firearm safety. An underage person may discharge a firearm only in the presence of a licensed graduate. All students must pass a full local, state and federal background check in order to be accepted into the class. All gun owners must pass a mandatory background check every two years in order to retain firearm possession.
Most of the above suggestions and format came from Washington teenagers that I simply asked ‘How do you feel about mass shootings’ and ‘What do you think we can do to have 0 count mass shootings in America?’
